The Secretary General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Dr. Jihad Al-Mahamid, said: “His Majesty King Abdullah II directed the government, in November 2021, to develop a long-term water strategy (2040) that addresses the challenges facing Jordan in this sector, with a clear vision for the development of the sector.” Using technology to address water challenges, quantify the amount of water wasted, address this important issue and take action to treat and reuse water in agriculture and industry, to counter the impact of climate change on the water sector. On Monday,the lecture delivered at the Royal Jordanian National Defense College entitled "Water Sector Reality and Challenges" for scholars in the 20th Defense Course, in the presence of the College Commandant, Brigadier General Mahameed indicated that the Ministry of Water and Irrigation looks to water as an essential element for economic, social and political development and national security by maintaining appropriate water supply rates for citizens and for other uses, and enhancing coverage of sanitation services despite the increasing demand for water and sanitation services. Mahameed indicated that the ministry is taking many new policies and improvements to increase efficiency and preserve fresh water, reuse and recycle available water and make optimal use of water resources by reducing technical and administrative water losses, in addition to improving energy efficiency in water treatment and distribution and introducing renewable energy. On the reality of water in Jordan, Mahameed added that Jordan exploits all available water resources in various uses, as the per capita consumption for domestic purposes in Jordan ranges between 80-120 liters per day, depending on the governorate, and the per capita share per year for all uses is less than 100 m3, which is equivalent to Less than 10% of the global poverty line rate, and 95% of water resources are described as being safely managed according to the definition of the sustainable development goals, and 96% of the population is served by water supply networks in urban areas and 88% in rural areas, and the water sector consumes about 15% of The total electricity used in Jordan, and the water loss is estimated at 47% for the year 2021 compared to 43% in 2010, and it is divided into more than 50% administrative losses, and less than 50% physical and technical losses. At the end of the lecture, an extensive discussion took place, during which the lecturer answered the scholars' questions and inquiries.
