The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, said: “The policy of diversitying the sources of natural gas supply and the long-term natural gas supply agreements, according to the current supply contracts, achieved savings during the first nine months of this year amounting to about $ 2.1 billion, which protected the National Electric Power Company from a rise Global LNG prices.
On Tuesday, the minister gave a lecture to students in the 20th National Defense Course at the Royal Jordanian National Defense College, entitled (Energy Sector Strategy for the Years 2020/2030), in the presence of theCollegeCommandant, Brigadier general Azzam Rawahneh, and the head and members of directing staff.
Regarding the ministry's role in promoting local energy sources in the total energy mix, Kharabsheh said: "Jordan is one of the leading countries in the field of developing renewable energy in the region. It currently produces about 29% of the electricity generated in the country from renewable energy sources, and we seek to reach 50% in 2030." He explained that the total installed capacity of electric power generation projects from renewable energy sources amounted to about 2,526 megawatts at the end of last July, which contributed 29% of the electric power generated since the beginning of 2022, compared to about 26% during 2021.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources added that the energy generated from the total installed capacity of renewable energy projects amounted to about 5.5 watt at the end of 2021, thus Jordan ranked first in the Arab world in terms of the percentage of installed capacity of renewable energy sources, without counting hydropower, and third after Egypt and Morocco in the amount of energy produced.
Kharabsheh stressed the Ministry of Energy's endeavor to increase this share to 50% by 2030, and for Jordan to become a regional center for green energy production by taking advantage of the abundance of renewable energy sources and Jordan's central location in the Middle East and Africa, indicating that the direction of the Ministry of Energy for the coming period includes Achieving the natural gas distribution project in the main cities and distributing about 90,000 solar heaters, and that this approach also includes improving the efficiency of energy consumption in all sectors by 9%.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources stated that with regard to oil exploration in the Sarhan field, a (Saudi-American) consortium has applied to work in the field, and a memorandum of understanding will be signed after obtaining the necessary approvals, pointing out that work is underway to drill three new wells, purchase an advanced drilling rig, and process and analyze bilateral seismic surveys. Dimensions and geological and geophysical studies, indicating that work is underway in the Hamza oil field to develop the field by drilling three new wells and developing a dynamic model for data analysis to determine the reserves in addition to re-processing three-dimensional seismic surveys, conducting geological and geophysical studies, and identifying new drilling sites.
Kharabsheh indicated that with regard to gas exploration, efforts are continuing to develop the Risha gas field by raising the capacity from 30 million cubic feet at present to about 50 million cubic feet in 2025 and reaching a production capacity of about 200 million cubic feet per day in 2030, explaining that he has turned The issue of marketing the gas produced from the Risha field, there are several companies that have submitted interest requests to invest in the activity of distributing compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas, pointing out that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently studying the activity of distributing compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas and determining the fair commission for companies interested in investing in distribution activities compressed and liquefied gas, and the study is expected to be completed in the near future.
Regarding the development of the oil and gas derivatives market, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources confirmed that the necessary procedures have been implemented to open the way for licensing two new marketing companies, and a study is underway to establish a specialized Jordanian natural gas company that will assume responsibility for natural gas contracts from the National Electricity Company and is preparing regulatory rules that allow the third party to use the infrastructure. gas infrastructure.
On supplying industries with gas, Kharabsheh said: "It has been agreed on a mechanism to implement the infrastructure required to deliver natural gas to industries from the main natural gas pipeline to the factory site through direct contracting between the end consumer and contractors. With regard to domestic gas, a study is currently underway to prepare a national program in cooperation with The Ministry of Finance to support the delivery of natural gas to cities and industrial clusters, and an economic feasibility study is underway for the project to establish natural gas distribution networks in Amman and Zarqa.
And the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources stated that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently reviewing oil and natural gas legislation, as the priority of the ministry's work is the initiative to "review the pricing mechanism for petroleum derivatives to encourage a healthy environment for the markets, including setting price ceilings and providing opportunities for competition in the market." In the vision of economic modernization, through the introduction of the necessary legislation to achieve this initiative.
