Former Interior Minister Samir Habashneh stated that the
political and social environment in Jordan is a key element of national
strength. This calls for an investigation into the influences that have shaped
the contemporary Jordanian national character. Throughout history, the
Jordanian national character has been an integral part of the Arab character,
from the Atlantic Ocean to the Arabian Gulf, with minor differences imposed by
the geographical environment and geopolitics.
This came during a lecture he delivered today at the Royal
Jordanian National Defense College, titled "Jordanian National Identity
and Character," for scholar in the 23rd Defense Course. The lecture was
attended by the college's commandant, the president, and members of diercting
staff.
Engineer Habashneh emphasized that the identity of the
Jordanian state is Arab and national, and that the Jordanian character is a
derivative of the balanced Arab character throughout history, with all its
qualities blending the Arab-Islamic heritage with the tolerant values of
Islam, founded on the principle of coexistence, harmony, and mutual affection
under the auspices of Arab identity with
all its multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-sectarian, and multi-sectarian
cultural components.
The former minister explained that the Jordanian people are
ambitious, and their Jordanian leadership is determined and open-minded,
embodying the aspirations of Jordanians and striving to reconcile the rich Arab
heritage and history, the moderate Islamic authority, and the demands and challenges
of the times. This has led to a rapid qualitative transformation in the
structure of Jordanian society and its economic and productive framework.
Engineer Habashneh called for strengthening national
identity and rising to the challenges facing Jordan amidst difficult regional
and international circumstances.
At the end of the lecture, extensive dialogue took place
during which the guest answered the scholar' questions and inquiries.
